Cornelius Holtorf:
Incavation Berlin-Schliemannstraße
An archaeological incavation project like this is a commentary about
-
the multitemporality of a place (any place really): a town house in Berlin
built in 1899 -- a breakfast on 5 September 2001 -- archaeologists at work
-- material remains of varying durability -- Heinrich Schliemann -- etc.
-
the metaphorical meaning of the underground: invisible but filled with objects
that characterise(d) the place and its people at a given point in time.
-
the way in which archaeologists, and indeed we all, construct the past.
The end result:
Dig where you stand!
Below the surface lies a piece of yourself.
The treasures in the ground, which modern archaeology investigates, are not
made from gold or silver.
Seemingly insignificant objects can supply us with a wealth of information
about the people associated with them.
This has not been the first incavation, and
it won't be the last.
